Michael Piotrowski is a professor (PAST-PTC) of digital humanities in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in Switzerland. He is co-director of the Laboratory of Digital humanities and Cultures of the University of Lausanne and academic co-director of the dhCenter UNIL–EPFL.

His main research interests are knowledge representation and formal modeling in the humanities and language technology for historical texts. He is the author of the first text book on NLP for historical texts (published by Morgan & Claypool) and also has a long-standing interest in document engineering and interactive editing and authoring aids (LingURed).
